400 F2.8 and 70-200 F2.8 is my usual setup on safari. Monopod to lower camera low to ground produces so much better results. For me F2.8 is essential for photographing in best light dawn and dusk and to get that creamy bokeh to separate subject from background. Lance you should sell that bag you put your 400 in to carry to vehicle. I would buy one
Amazing video and nice to see the 2 different setups. Something to think about. I’m shooting with a D500 and Nikon 200-500 f/5.6 and a Tamron 70-200 f/2.8. I love the 70-200 and thinking of a mirrorless body to add to the setup 😆
Lance, get a frisbee to rest the pano plate on. Will stop the sand. There are some very fancy things out there like the Skimmer Ground Pod that you mount a gimbal to. My dream setup would be a Canon R6ii with that 100 - 500 lens.
Just an FYI for Lance, that fantastic Canon 100-300 f/2.8 is A$14K here in OZ (R168K), I knew Sth Africa always paid thru the nose, but that local price of R250K is pure madness!
And to add to my original comment, I fall into the trap of thinking I don’t have enough (more to do with my worrying unnecessarily about things lol)
I wish I had so much equipment lol (I suppose that’s why you put in the work hours but also like you said I suppose it’s not totally necessary to get great images); Canon all the way btw! A 2.8 400mm is a dream lens but just like I always say, I probably have to work my way up. Thanks for this video gentlemen, two great photographers to look to for inspiration!
What is the ‘pano plate’ called and who makes it? It looks like a great piece of kit.

What a fun video, I love it! Villiers=minimalist and Lance=over-kill and I am somewhere in between. Thank you both for keeping me motivated between my trips to Africa. Cheers from Long Beach, California 😸💞
me and daughter from India watched video today !! and we thoroughly enjoyed every of it.. love from India ❤❤
Omhat Lance - you need you own private plane to take all that gear 😮😂 Villiers I'm with you, the less, the lighter, the better. Really interesting episode as always, thanks guys 👍🏻
Thanks guys - great and timely video for me. I'm about to go on a 3 week self drive through Botswana with me, my partner and the 2 kids in the back. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my ef 500mm f4 lens but can't handle having that on my lap on African roads for 3 weeks so I'll take a r7 with the rf 100-500mm lens (extra reach for birds) and an r5 with a 70-300mm ef lens, plus an mounted 24-105mmf4 lens if I want to shake things up a bit or for in camp / family snaps/ landscape use. After a couple of near misses (I'm clumsy) with smashed lenses or malfunctioning camera bodies I wouldn't risk going on an expensive trip without a spare camera body / alternative lens. I don't travel with a laptop and we'll mostly be camping so the complicated bit has been trying to work out how many GB of memory cards and how many spare camera batteries.
Glad you enjoyed the podcast :) Those are two GREAT combos for overlanding and should cover all your bases without taking up too much space. Enjoy! I'm jealous!
I take my Z8 1.4 x Convertor , 20mm f1.8 S for landscapes and Milky Way , 24-120 F4 S for Wild Life and Camp Shots , 180-600 f5.6 - 6.3 VR >> Wild Life and Birds in Flight
You certainly are covering all your bases!
You can take sharp objects even knives in checked-in luggage (not cabin luggage) as long as it’s checked all the way through to your destination. You can most definitely take a multitool like leatherman and even a Swiss Army knife in Checked-in luggage. I’ve even carried chefs knives in checked in luggage. Just don’t take lithium ion batteries in checked in, or sharp objects in carry on/ cabin luggage.
I've definitely learnt something new! Seems like I have been overly cautious over the years...
Very nice video
You can take sharp objects even knives in checked-in luggage (not cabin luggage) as long as it’s checked all the way through to your destination. You can most definitely take a multitool like leatherman and even a Swiss Army knife in Checked-in luggage. I travel with a Swiss Army knife all the time and have been to about 30 countries. I’ve even carried my chefs knives in checked in luggage. Just don’t take lithium ion batteries in checked in, or sharp objects in carry on/ cabin luggage.
I'm going to SA, but our hold bag can be no more 20kg. And our carry on no more than 8kg what would you take I have an r5, r6, canon 500mm, canon 100-500mm and a sigma 75mm.
R5 or R6 with 100-500. Its what I take with me when I go to SA from Aus. Fortunately I have 14kg carry on allowance on Qantas FF status. Throw in a wide 20-75 mm if I will do lansdscapes
@@richardtustin thank you.
Chris, if you're not willing to pay extra to take that 500mm prime with, pack the both camera bodies and the 100-500mm. Having a backup camera body is always handy and shouldn't be so heavy that you go over the 8kg limit.
@@TheSafariExpert you can’t pay for extra carry on in my experience. Only check in luggage. No help.
@@TheSafariExpert think I will.
What do you think about the nikon z9+400 f2.8 with built in teleconverter?
IMO THE best wildlife setup, I have that combo alongside another Z9 and my Z70-200 f/2.8 & Z24-70 f/4 which just about covers the majority of focal lengths. And yes, like Lance I always take a Leatherman with me on safari, just as long as it's in your check-in bag.....no issues.
I haven't used that combo specifically, but sounds amazing! Just make sure you have something wider to photography animals in the environment as well.
Great video! One request - can you introduce a lag before displaying the name of the birds? I am trying to find vids to use to teach my kid to identify SA birds and he thinks it is pretty funny if he can just read the answer instead of working it out for himself! The lag just needs to be long enough to pause the vid. Same applies to animal vids.
Too late now 😅 Have you guys taken my bird call challenge?
@@TheSafariExpert Yup - terrible results though. I just discovered Roberts app has calls so have a way to learn them finally.
This is sad. Every time I see this hyena I feel sorry for it. It is not a success story, it is an absolute shame.
The new shop is quite nice
Have not been there for awhile. Thanks for your video
Nice videos b following
Catching up on some older vids. The Kruger, magic
Hey need a small help of yours.. if we have only three days can you please suggest which camp side we should stay to see maximum no of animals.. though i have seen all your videos of kruga and i found orpen, tamboti and maroela best but i am thinking to switch camps every day… do you think its a good idea to do.. please reply 🙏🏻
If you have only three days, stay at Berg en Dal, Skukuza and Lower Sabie. Just make sure you book long in advance.

Был бы он 100-600мм с такими же параметрами, было бы круто! А так обрезок какой то!((( Canon украл 100мм у фотоохотников! В итоге купил себе 200-800мм.
What aperture setting are you using? My telephoto only goes down to f5 at 150mm
Enjoyed this video, inspiring. Out of curiosity I searched Madikwe on your channel and this is the top result, which is obviously not Madikwe, still am glad I stumbled onto this one. I am curious whether you’ve covered Madikwe or just your thoughts on that reserve? Cheers!
As much as I love Kruger, our family went several times a year when I was growing up, my most incredible safari was actually in Uganda. We started out the morning game drive from the lodge and saw some of the big 5, amazing vistas, etc. About an hour in, we came to a deep gorge where a micro climate existed that produced a forest in a relatively narrow canyon running through the savannah. We disembarked and went on a chimp trekking walk. On the same game drive. I haven’t found another place like that. This was in Queen Elizabeth National Park.
👍👍
We are lucky to be heading out to Moremi/Savuti/Chobe from Ireland next week with our two teenagers. Really loved watching all your videos; fabulous photography and great fun too. So excited to experience wildlife in the wilderness ourselves.
Thank you for your great videos. My wife and I returned from our honeymoon in the Kruger National Park a week ago. It was an incredibly nice time and some of your videos, especially the ones about the camps in Kruger, helped us a lot when planning the trip. We would like to thank you and look forward to the next videos. Many greetings from Northern Germany André and Katha
The pleasure is all mine 😁
